Sebastian Molin obtained his PhD from Gdańsk University of Technology (Gdańsk, Poland) in 2011 working on?metal-supported solid oxide cells. Then he worked at Technical University of Denmark as postdoc and researcher on?high temperature corrosion and development of protective coatings for steel interconnects. Since 2017 he is leading a research group back in Gdańsk, where he works with several aspects of solid oxide cells: nanocrystalline oxygen electrodes, corrosion of porous alloys, new protective coating materials for steel interconnect.


Abstract

Stainless steels find important applications in solid oxide cells, either as interconnect (dense alloy) or electrode supporting structure (porous alloys). During exposures at high temperatures, oxidation of the chromium occurs and an oxide scale develops over time. This has important implications for the operation?of solid oxide cells, e.g. increasing electrical resistance of the inteconnect. In this talk I will discuss corrosion?issues related to?porous and dense alloys, lifetime of the alloys vs. the operating conditions and possible protective measures, which include for example development of dedicated protective coatings or pre-oxidation. By combining steels with surface coatings, their lifetime and functional properties can be greatly extended.
