Shaun Chan is an Associate Professor at UNSW (University of New South Wales) and a 2023 CSIRO International Hydrogen Research Program Mid-Career Fellow. His research focuses on optical and laser-based imaging diagnostics for high-pressure, high-temperature engine environments; technical, economic, and environmental analysis of energy systems; and fire safety. His group's research has contributed to significant advancements in integrating hydrogen into existing combustion systems for cleaner, more efficient, and reliable combustion; demonstrating the economic and technical feasibility of hydrogen-fueled power generation integrated with solar farms for baseload renewable energy; quantifying the economic impact of transportation emissions in Australia; and redefining fire evacuation practices through improved detection and modeling.


Abstract

Hydrogen offers a promising pathway for decarbonizing internal combustion engines (ICEs); however, its unique properties present significant challenges. Low volumetric density, low ignition energy, and high flame speed can hinder power density and lead to safety issues such as pre-ignition or backfiring, potentially causing significant engine damage. Researchers at UNSW have made substantial progress in addressing these challenges with a hydrogen-diesel dual direct injection (H2DDI) approach. This method employs high-pressure direct injection for hydrogen, coupled with a diesel pilot injection for ignition. This presentation will report the recent progress made, including the use of H2DDI to effectively overcomes limitations associated with other hydrogen introduction methods, enabling operation with high hydrogen energy shares (up to 90%) in the medium load range and a corresponding reduction in CO? emissions. This represents approximately a two-fold increase in hydrogen energy substitution compared to more commonly used approaches like H?-Port Fuel Injection that are hindered by the implementation challenges.
