Dr?Hab.?Eng.?Zygmunt?Mikno?[PhD?(DSc)?Habilitated?Eng.)]?is?the?Deputy?Director?of?the?Welding?Centre?at?the?Upper?Silesian?Institute?of?Technology.?He?obtained?his?master's,?doctoral?and?postdoctoral?degrees?in?electrical?engineering?and?mechanical?engineering,?respectively?at?the?Silesian?University?of?Technology?in?Gliwice?and?the?Wroclaw?University?of?Technology,?in?1989,?2005?and?2019.?His?area?of?research?interests?includes?monitoring?welding?processes?(parameter?measurements),?quality?assessment?in?welding?engineering,?design?of?test?rigs?used?in?welding?engineering,??temperature?measurements?in?welding?processes,?modelling?of?welding?processes?(resistance?welding)?and?cryogenics?in?welding?processes.?He?is?the?author?and?co-author?of?over?200?scientific?publications,?including?books,?articles?in?journals?and?at?conferences,?35?patents?and?over?40?implementations?in?industry.?He?has?participated?in?the?implementation?of?numerous?research?projects.?Dr?Mikno?is?a?member?of?many?national?and?international?organizations?including?a?senior?member?of?IEEE,?a?member?of?the?European?AWS?(American?Welding?Science)?and?the?organizer?of?the?meeting?of?Commission?III?of?the?IIW.?Zygmunt?Mikno?completed?a?course?and?obtained?an?IWE?certificate?of?competence?according?to?the?accreditation?by?the?European?Federation?for?Welding,?Joining?and?Cutting?and?the?International?Institute?of?Welding.


Abstract

The?resistance?welding?process?is?commonly?used?in?industry.?The?main?area?of?application?is?the?automotive?industry.?Each?improvement?in?welding?technology?affects?the?safety?of?users?of?joined?structures.?This?is?also?the?case?subjected?to?analysis,?i.e.?the?projection?welding?of?nuts?to?which?the?seat?belt?in?a?car?is?attached.?The?driver's?and?passengers’?health?and?life?depend?on?the?quality?of?this?joint.

The?analysis?was?concerned?with?influence?of?the?pulsed?welding?current?(DC?1?kHz)?on?the?course?of?the?projection?welding?of?nuts.?The?analysis?was?carried?out?relative?to?the?condition?of?the?same?root-mean-square?pulsed?DC?compared?to?continuous?(i.e.?commonly?used)?DC?(within?the?so-called?conventional?mode).?The?analysis?involved?nuts?welded?to?another?element,?i.e.?sheet?metal.?The?numerical?analysis?was?performed?using?SORPAS?software.?The?characteristic?parameters?subjected?to?analysis?included?weld?strength,?volume?of?molten?material?(in?the?area?subjected?to?welding),?the?area?of?the?molten?material?in?the?contact?area?and?welding?energy.?The?results?of?numerical?calculations?were?verified?experimentally.?The?tests?demonstrated?a?beneficial?effect?of?the?pulsed?welding?current?on?the?quality?of?welded?joints?(in?particular?strength).

Dr?Mariusz?Stepien?is?an?Associate?Professor?at?the?Department?of?Power?Electronics,?Electrical?Drives,?and?Robotics,?Faculty?of?Electrical?Engineering,?Silesian?University?of?Technology?(SUT).?He?received?the?M.Sc.,?Ph.D.,?and?Habilitate?Doctorate?(D.Sc.)?degrees,?all?in?electrical?engineering,?from?SUT,?Gliwice,?Poland,?in?1999,?2006?and?2019,?respectively.?His?area?of?research?interests?includes?power?electronics,?energy?conversion,?superconductivity,?high?frequency?and?special?transformers,?resistance?welding?machines,?FEM?modeling?of?electrical?engineering?and?interdisciplinary?problems.?He?is?an?author?and?co-author?of?almost?200?scientific?publications,?including?books,?journal?and?conference?papers?and?patents.?Participated?in?implementation?of?numerous?research?and?educational?projects,?many?of?them?funded?by?EU?programs.?Dr.?Stepien?is?a?senior?member?of?the?IEEE?and?a?member?European?Society?of?Superconductivity?(ESAS).?He?is?serving?as?a?Vice?Chair?of?the?Chapter?of?Magnetics,?Polish?Section?of?the?IEEE?and?a?Vice?Chair?of?the?Power?Electronics?and?Motion?Control?Council.


Abstract

Superconducting?technology,?especially?in?the?area?of?high-temperature?superconductivity,?is?a?subject?with?great?application?potential?in?modern?energy?transition.?Characterized?by?the?use?of?advanced?materials?with?unique?mechanical,?electrical?and?thermal?properties,?it?allows?for?the?development?of?devices?with?unprecedented?efficiency?and?energy?density.?Due?to?the?complexity?and?interdisciplinary?nature?of?the?issue,?superconductivity?requires?intensive?research,?both?in?terms?of?material?structures,?mechanical?and?thermal?properties,?as?well?as?electrical?and?magnetic?properties.?The?lecture?will?present?the?main?properties?and?challenges?related?to?superconductivity?and?the?main?application?areas?of?this?technology?in?the?aspect?of?energy?transition?its?natural?environment?influence.?Selected?examples?of?research?activity?of?international?teams?and?their?achievements?in?the?field?of?superconducting?technology?applications?in?high-power?devices?and?in?modern?vehicles?and?transport?systems?will?be?presented?and?discussed.
